About The Project
The Pottawatomie Lighthouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the first U.S. Government lighthouse to be built on the waters of Wisconsin. The State of Wisconsin contracted with Isthmus Architecture, Inc. to restore this historically significant structure. This restoration project included restoring the interior of the lighthouse, the nearby latrine, oil house and smokehouse, as well as constructing an ADA-accessible composting toilet facility. The scope of work included plastering, painting, sanding and refinishing floors, and repairing doors and other millwork. The Friends of Rock Island have a tour guide living on-site to interpret the history of the site and its keepers to the many tourists that visit Rock Island during the summer months.
