About The Project
As part of the creation of the new Racine Intermodal Transportation Facility within an urban city block, Isthmus Architecture, Inc. was contracted to restore and rehabilitate the former Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Depot as a commuter rail and bus facility. The scope of the project included restoring the original grand waiting room, providing rehabilitated support facilities, restoring the exterior and upgrading the platform and canopy to meet commuter rail standards. The second phase restored the west canopy platform.
The project, sponsored by the City of Racine, was partially funded by a Department of Transportation 2001-2003 Federal Enhancement Grant. Compliance with Section 106 was also required for this project. The work followed National Park Service Standards and complied with the Wisconsin Historical Society guidelines for restoration and rehabilitation.
The restored and rehabilitated 8,000-square foot facility serves both regional bus and Chicago commuter rail passengers.
